Reuben Willcox, Bariton, studierte an der Guildhall School of Music in London, an der Juillard School in New York und an der Staatl. Hochschule für Musik in Mannheim bei Prof. Rudolf Piernay, und war Preisträger beim Internationalen Gesangswettbewerbs „Neue Stimmen“.

Nach seinem Fest-Engagement am Landestheater Coburg (1998-2000) wurde der Bariton Ensemblemitglied der Oper Bonn (2000-2005), wo er mit den wichtigsten Partien seines Faches auftrat, darunter Mozarts Don Giovanni, Papageno und Guglielmo, Marcello (Puccini, La Bohème), Figaro (Rossini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Vater (Humperdinck, Hänsel und Gretel), Dandini (Rossini, La Cenerentola), Danilo (Lehár, Die lustige Witwe), Pollux (Rameau, Castor et Pollux), Donner (Wagner, Das Rheingold) und Heerrufer (Wagner, Lohengrin).

Neben Gast-Engagements an verschiedenen deutschen Bühnen (Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Oper Köln, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Staatstheater Hannover) sang er in der Originalproduktion des Festivals Aix-en-Provence Brittens Curlew River in New York. Es folgten mit dem Collegium Vocale Gent Jephta (Händel) in Antwerpen und Paris und die Titelrolle in Ludovicus Pius (Schürmann) im Konzerthaus Berlin mit der Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin.

Als Aeneas in Sasha Waltz Produktion von Purcells  Dido und Aeneas gastierte er mit der Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, in vielen Metropolen, darunter Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper München, 2014 auch in Sidney, Australien, 2016 in Teatro Colón Buenos Aires und Teatro dell’Opera, Rom. Er war regelmäßig als Gast am Nationaltheater Mannheim tätig, u.a. in der Titelpartie des „Herkules“ von Händel beim Bydgoszcz Opera Festival, Polen in 2018. In 2021 sang er Don Pizarro (Beethoven, Fidelio) für die Bühne Württembergisches Allgäu und in 2022 bei den Schwetzinger und Bregenzer Festspielen mit dem Ensemble Modern eine der Hauptpartien in der Uraufführung von Kapitän Nemos Bibliothek von Johannes Kalitzke.

Im Rahmen seiner Konzerttätigkeit sang er zahlreiche Liederabende und Konzerte mit Werken des geistlichen und weltlichen Konzertrepertoires u.a. mit der Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, dem Malmö Symphony Orchestra (Schweden) und der Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart. Er wirkte mit beim Internationalen Beethovenfest Bonn, beim Granada Festival (Spanien) sowie in  Rundfunk-und Fernsehproduktionen des SWR, WDR, ZDF und ARTE.

Während seiner sängerischen Laufbahn bildete er sich selbst regelmäßig bis heute im privaten Gesangsunterricht weiter, u.a. bei Cornelius Reid (New York), Richard Staab (Darmstadt) und Luigi Maiello und besuchte Meisterkurse bei Daniel Ferro (New York), Prof. R. Piernay und Prof. S. Stamenkovic.

Seit einigen Jahren widmet er sich intensiv der Gesangspädagogik, seit 2019 auch an der Musikhochschule Mannheim im Lehrauftrag für Gesang.

Reuben Willcox

Reuben Willcox studied at London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Juilliard School in New York and the Opera School of the Mannheim Musikhochschule in Germany. A prize-winner at the 1999 “Neue Stimmen” International Singing Competition, he has also won awards from the Peter Moores Foundation, the Countess of Munster and Ian Fleming Musical Trusts and the Richard Wagner Verband.

He was a soloist at the Landestheater Coburg from 1998-2000 and the Bonn Opera from 2000-2005 where he sang many of the major roles for lyric and cavalier baritone including Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Guglielmo and Papageno; Dandini (Rossini, La Cenerentola); Figaro (Rossini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia); Marcello (Puccini, La Bohème); Donner (Wagner, Das Rheingold); Heerrufer (Wagner, Lohengrin) and the Father in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. He has also sung leading roles from the baroque, operetta and late twentieth century repertoire.

As a guest soloist, he has sung at theatres throughout Germany including the Festspielhaus Baden Baden, the Cologne Opera and Hannover State Opera. In 2007 he sang the ‘Ferryman’ in Yoshi Oida’s production for Aix-en-Provence of Britten’s Curlew River at the Japan Festival in New York. He has sung the role of Aeneas in Sasha Waltz’ production of  Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the  Berlin State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, Munich, Saddler’s Wells in London, the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, ‘La Monnaie’ Opera in Brussels and in 2016 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. He is a regular guest soloist at the Nationaltheater Mannheim with whom he sang the title tole in Handel’s Hercules at the 2018 Bydgoszcz Opera Festival in Poland. In 2021 he sang Don Pizarro (Beethoven, Fidelio) for the Bühne Württembergisches Allgäu and in 2022 the world premiere of Johannes Kalitzke’s “Captain Nemo’s Library” with the Ensemble Modern at the Schwetzingen and Bregenz Festivals.

His concert work includes lieder recitals in Spain and Germany and performances at the International Beethoven Festival, Bonn, the Granada Festival, Spain, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Sweden, Handel’s Jephtha with the Collegium Vocale Gent in Paris and Antwerp, and the title role in Schürmann’s Ludovicus Pius with the Akademie für Alte Musik at the Konzerthaus, Berlin.

He has sung in radio and television broadcasts for SWR, WDR, ZDF and ARTE in Germany, France and Spain.

Since 2019 he teaches singing at the Musikhochschule Mannheim.
